The Country Landowners’ Association runs the biggest gamefair
of the season, this year at Belvoir Castle on the last weekend in July.
As with the regional gamefairs such as the Kent and Westcountry and
more recently the Falconry weekend, the organisers contact breed clubs
to send representatives and their dogs to be put ‘on show’ in
pavilions, so that members of the public can come and ask about the
working aspect of the breed.
And every year, Weimaraners and their owners, who are experienced
in working the breed, rise to the occasion and give up their time to
help promote the field work side of the breed. So as not to overtax
the dogs in the hot weather, and to give the representatives a chance
to have a look around, we try to have 4 handlers, minimum 2 per day – time
to dash to the loo and get a cup of coffee!
This year Margarita Booker with Aza, and Beate von Dwingelo-Lutten’s
Lexa and daughter Elsa set up and took charge of the stand on Friday.
Chris Spree’s Trog and Grey and Andreas and Nienke Guhl’s
Aloxe and Lafite fielded questions and took part in the parade of Gundogs
on the Saturday, while our ‘notherly’ reps Ann and Tony
Stone with Vice and Wayne Cooper’s Visha enjoyed the last day
of the gamefair, taking down the stand at the end of the day.
The Club is grateful for volunteers and their dogs to be ambassadors
for the breed around the country – if you would like to support
the working Weimaraner at one of the gamefairs, please contact the
field trial secretary, Suzi Burton.
